Enmeshment—restoring healthy boundaries and personal identity
Enmeshment, as described in the work of Dr. Kenneth M. Adams, occurs when family relationships become overly fused and personal boundaries are poorly defined, preventing the development of a healthy, independent identity. A child may become emotionally over-involved with a parent—often taking on roles such as confidant or caretaker—while their own needs for autonomy and self-definition are suppressed.

Without addressing these early boundary violations, individuals may struggle with guilt, codependency, intimacy issues, or relationships that repeat the same enmeshed dynamics. Therapy informed by Dr. Adams’ work helps identify these patterns, strengthen boundaries, and support the development of a clear, differentiated sense of self.
